The Morrigan
Phantom Queen · Washer at the Ford · Sovereign of the Battle-Crow
The Morrigan does not arrive gently. She comes as three sisters in one — Badb, Macha, Nemain — as a crow circling the field before the fighting starts, as the woman at the river's edge washing the linen of those about to fall. She is prophecy and slaughter, sovereignty and shapeshifting, the fierce love that tells you the truth before it's comfortable to hear it.
We call her when the soft asking is over. When you need to know what's coming rather than hope it away. When a threshold must be crossed and something in you is still standing on the near bank, waiting for permission. She is not called for comfort — she is called for clarity, for courage, and for the kind of fierce protection that doesn't flinch.
Mead — her offering since the old tellings, poured for sovereignty and pact-making. It sweetens the approach without softening the truth of it; you come to her with intention, not apology.
Myrrh — the old grief-resin, burned at thresholds between the worlds. It steadies the smoke and grounds the working in the body, honouring that her gifts often arrive through loss before they arrive as strength.
Mugwort — the seer's herb, sharpening sight beyond the veil. This is what lets her prophecy through: it opens the inner eye so you can actually hear what she's come to tell you.
Dragon's Blood — resin of protection and raw will. It's the backbone of the blend, the ingredient that turns invocation into armour, calling in her fierceness as shield as much as sword.
Frankincense — ancient and consecrating, lifting the whole working toward the sacred. It reminds the smoke — and you — that even her battlefield magic is holy work.
Cedarwood — steady, rooted, incorruptible. It's what keeps you standing once she's answered; the wood that doesn't bend when the wind she brings starts moving through the room.
Light in dim spaces, before divination, before a decision that requires spine rather than sentiment. Let the smoke rise, and don't ask her for anything you're not prepared to see clearly.
